The Best Clothes to Keep You Warm on Your Next Run

If running is part of your exercise regime, you probably aren't going to let winter stop you from maintaining your fitness. You may even know that running in cold weather provides additional health benefits, such as boosting your immune system and burning more calories. But we humans are susceptible to the cold, so winter runs mean rethinking what we wear. Let's take a look at some of the best clothing choices.

Your Torso and Legs

Layers of clothing work better than one thick garment because warm air gets trapped between the layers, acting as an insulator. Begin with a short or long-sleeve base layer made from breathable and moisture-wicking fabric to draw sweat away from your skin. Choose running shorts or half tights for your legs. The mid-layer should be a long sleeve top, or a windbreaker if there's moisture in the air. If the temperature is below freezing, seriously consider adding a running jacket as an insulating outer layer and always ensure your outer layer has reflective elements if visibility is poor.

Head, Hands and Feet

Running in snow and ice conditions will require appropriate footwear with enough traction to cope with the changes underfoot. Your running shoes should also be water-repellent to keep cold moisture away from your socks and feet. Wearing layers won't be enough to keep you feeling warm if your head and hands feel the chill, so wear a beanie and a pair of gloves (if you need to use your phone, choose gloves with silicone tips). Any exposed skin can feel the cold, so consider wearing a snood or headband to keep the chill from your face, ears and neck.
