Meg Kimura is a personal trainer and coach living on the Gold Coast in Australia. While she works directly with clients in her community, she also uses Instagram to reach women around the world. The powerbuilder is passionate about the benefits of lifting and encourages women to add strength training to their fitness routines.
"If I can encourage females to see weight training as a means of empowerment and form of self-care, I've done my job here," Meg says on one of her Instagram stories.
Meg began lifting weights when she was 17 and now incorporates elements of bodybuilding and powerlifting into her own training. Powerbuilding is a hybrid training style focusing on techniques for adding size (bodybuilding) and maximal strength (powerlifting).
She believes exercise is important for both physical and mental growth. Driven to share what she's learned, she took a leap of faith, leaving behind a marketing career and starting her own business coaching women. "I've been a beginner. I know what it feels like. Growth is scary and success is not linear, and I want to be in the corner of females so they'll believe in themselves as much as I believe in them," she explained in her post.
It can be intimidating to browse the Instagram pages of online trainers, especially if you're starting your journey and their level of fitness seems out of reach. But Meg's honesty and vulnerability resonates with many women. "It might look like I have it all together with training but I don't," she explained in a recent Becoming You podcast. "I still struggle with body image; I still struggle with…being intimidated on the gym floor…I still struggle with lifting a heavy weight and actually believing in myself that I can do it."
Yet Meg also exemplifies the transformative potential of exercise. She explains in the podcast that she got into fitness for the wrong reasons — "[I] wanted to change the way that I looked but not from an internal need to feel good about myself or empower myself, but I just thought I wasn't good enough." Now, she fully embraces the power of exercise and trains for performance, strength, and confidence. It's motivating to many of her followers to see her determination pay off. In September, Meg posted a video of herself lifting 176 pounds, surpassing her previous competition best.
As a flexible dieting enthusiast, she doesn't focus on restricting foods, but monitoring macronutrient intake, such as carbohydrates, fats, and proteins, to support her body composition goals. You can find nutrition tips on Meg's socials, such as this video about macro-friendly snacks.
